The University of Virginia student council broadcasts information daily on important student news and events and required a web site that could display this time-sensitive content clearly and effectively. The Council needed an effective tool to communicate with the student body and a simple CMS that would allow over 20 administrators with various levels of technical experience to add content and rich media.
The previous Student Council site ran on a default Wordpress blog template with a bland design, difficult interface and nowhere to feature the variety of information the Council provided.
Refresh custom built a design and Wordpress template that focuses on:
- Pulling relevant snippets of recent/upcoming events and photos onto a home page news feed that links back to full story/event details and commenting capabilities.
- Integrating a large format jQuery-powered slideshow to highlight student activities and garner interest.
- Highlight the Council’s social networking sites (including Twitter, Facebook, user comments and an RSS feed)
- Creating a hierarchical page structure for the 13 cabinet departments to expand their individual pages while retaining a clear navigation format without need for technical expertise.
- Integrating the classic style elements of the University with fresh, modern variations for a uniform, but unique, design.
- Fitting cleanly in any browser with minimal scrolling required and relevant information “above the fold.”
